Capt John Gerrish
It is with sadness that I have to record the passing of Capt. John Gerrish. John had been ill for some time although he was always cheery when I called for a chat in recent days. He was a great help with information about British Eagle he started with Eagle at Blackbushe in the mid 50's. Like many he had so many stories to tell. Like the one after he had landed on Christmas Island just before they exploded the first Atom bomb. Sticking to the rules, he had run out of duty time, so he stayed put on the Island much to the disgust of the CO and witness the whole event with other members of the crew. For a while the crew were known at the sterile seven !
John always maintained that he was the oldest pilot in the world. This was due to a mistake in the date of a medical certificate issued in 1967 but dated 15th August 1867!
We send our condolences to his wife Gill and the family.
The funeral is as follows:
Monday 10th JULY
Time 1630hrs
at Bury ST. Edmunds Crematorium
Also, Some of you might know this already but sadly Dave Fellowes Flight Safety Officer with Eagle passed away recently. Amongst other things Dave served in the RAF Bomber Command as an air gunner. To see a little bit of his live story see U tube 'RAF Benevolent Fund 70th anniversary of operation Mana. Interview with RAF veteran Dave Fellowes'
Also, the passing Bridget Duffy of Air Stewardess with Eagle
Regards to all
Eric

It is with extreme sorrow that I have to record the passing of Roger Hargreaves chairman of the Bristol Aircraft Preservation Trust that is restoring Charlie Fox. He with others saved this aircraft from the fire dump at Manston many years ago.
Some folk are thought to have something in their veins that just drives them to great lengths to follow their dream.
Roger Hargreaves had aviation and his beloved Britannia Charlie Fox running through his veins.
I first met Roger one day down at Kemble where Charlie Fox was being store with the Bristol collection.
It was a special meeting in as much I renewed my acquaintance with an aircraft that I had worked on in the
sixties when it was with British Eagle but also to meet up for the first time with Roger. His enthusiasm for the
restoration project of Charlie Fox was beyond doubt. It has been many years since it was saved from the
fire dump at Manston airport. The aircraft was eventually moved to various airfields in an effort to save it.
It was before it left Kemble airfield that it came the closest to being scrapped. Roger’s determination to save
the aircraft would not allow him to give up on the project. I recall the night he called to say he had found
at last a site for the aircraft. It was to go to Speke Liverpool,( the old hunting ground of British Eagle) with
the help of what was then the Jet Stream Club. As the aircraft, which arrive in three parts, was reassembled
Roger was now in a very positive mood. Yes it was to be a time with many difficulties but his determination
never flagged. Roger was deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Bates his co-worker on the project from
the start. However his enthusiasm and determination never waned.
In employment Roger worked for a number of airlines and in general aviation and was considered by many
as a professional in his work. He held the record of being the shortest serving employee when he started to
work for British Eagle. He joined the company on the day that it went into liquidation! He operated his own
company Proteus Aero Services in the early days which was involved in the saving of several aircraft
that are still around today.
We the team who work on Charlie Fox, will seek to continue the progress of its restoration
and will not give up. Roger a few weeks ago was planning how the future would fan out without him.
Roger will truly be missed not only as a friend but one who dreamed the impossible dream.
We will continue to makethat dream become a reality.
We send our love and deepest sympathy to his wife Sally and Angel.
For further information watch this web site.
It has been suggested that people might like to make a donation towards the
restoration of Charlie Fox in Rogers memory.
See the Britannia Aircraft Preservation Trust web site

G-AROI D.H.DOVE NAMED ‘EAGLET’
Eagle operated a Dove G-AROI for approximately eighteen months during 1966-1968. Little is known about this operation except that it served in the main between Dundee and Heathrow and Liverpool. It is known to have been serviced in the main at the Eagle’s Liverpool maintenance base. You will remember that Eagle named it ‘Eaglet’. A number of photo’s appeared in aviation magazines during those years.
The Museum at Malaga airport have a Dove which they plan to restore for exhibition in the museum repainting it British Eagle colours and have asked for any historical information about the aircraft that anyone knows of.
It you have anything that might help would you be so kind as to send information in the first place to: britisheagleint@aol.com
This is the official Eagle Archive address. Thank you in anticipation
Eric (archivist)
Suggested items of interest:
1. Crew names? Are any known to still be alive? 2. Did the aircraft operated on any other routes? 3. Does any maintenance staff either at Liverpool or Heathrow have any stories about the aircraft? 4. Any passengers remember flying on the aircraft? 5. Do you hold any memorabilia ie. tickets timetables adverts. We at Eagle Archives would be particularly interested. 6. An ithing thig else that is relevent.
