As we approach the end of another year it has been a year with a sense of sadness as a number of ex staff have left us and we respect their memory. Life in the archives has been yet again a very busy time. The amount of Eagle things still out there ceases to amaze me. We have had a large influx of aircraft manual, photos, and general memorabilia. The Eagle items belonging to Captain Ralph Kohn have enhanced the archive considerable eventually more will be seen on the website. Help has been given to members of families whose relatives worked for Eagle and also ex passengers families. We are grateful to the many ex passengers who have looked at the website and followed on by donating items of real interest. The future of the archives in principle has now been agreed. So they will be kept safely for future generations. I know that many have asked about the future of G-APSA at Coventry the latest can be found on thedc6.com if more news becomes available it will be posted on the Home of Eagle website. Charlie Fox (G-ANCF) at Liverpool Speke has had a lot of internal restoration work completed and our volunteer group has increased in number by some very enthusiastic people. The work has been hindered by a number of things, the weather and by a large consignment of Land Rover vehicles that had been agreed by the hotel to be allowed to park close by the aircraft. However we acknowledge that the land is owned by the hotel and we are their guests. That problem now no longer exists so early next year weather permitting the remaining paint striping will be completed. For further info see the www.bristol-britannia.com/p/home.html This week I have just received three large boxes of Eagle memorabilia. Most has now been file and is exceptionally interesting. All that remains is to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a great New Year and thank you for all the help you give from time to time. Eric, Gerda and Karl

B.O.A.C. COMET 4's You may recall that I raised the question of the purchase by British Eagle of ex B.O.A.C Comet aircraft. We had no real results apart from comments made in flight magazine. Below is the request that I made;
Does anyone know about the details for the possible purchase of ex B.O.A.C Comet? This would have been in 1967. Flight magazine records a small item that says we were negotiating to purchase three. Later they record that we had a surprising response to a recruitment drive for Comet pilots most from the corporations!!! Now that says something! We needed 12 crews. If memory serves me correct I think that some maintenance guys went to MEA for training.
However just recently I was given for our archives about three large boxes containing some very interesting items and the following information was found about our proposed Comet purchase in a letter:
Quote: 'We are now in a position to be able to confirm that the registration numbers of the Comets 4B's that we have purchased from B.O.A.C, are: G-APDL/G-APDN/G-APDP. The aircraft are under-going 'check fours' and re-furbishing prior coming into service with British Eagle:the first aircraft to be operational and to join our fleet will be in mid June 1967, the others will follow at Monthly intervals'
But as Flight Magazine records Eagle were unable to find enough work for them so the order was cancelled.
My thanks to the donor.

BOEING 707 G-AWDG an ex Eagle aircraft has been flying for the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo for a long number of years. It is painted in a version of the Dreamilner colours. Built in 1959 it stills flies and was seen arriving with the President of the Congo at Beijing China for the Chinese People's anti Japanees war and the world anti facist 70th anniversary victory parade,as reported by an Chinees aircraft enthusiast. Amazing that this fifty six year old passenger jet stills flies!

CAPT. RALPH KOHN COLLECTION
I think that it can be truly said that Ralph Kohn was a man who would help anyone if they needed it and if he was able to. Recently I was given all of Ralph’s notes, documents and photos appertaining to Eagle for the archives. We already held his uniforms. These latest things have proved a valuable asset to the archives. A number of questions that we had been asked over the years for which the archives did not have any answer, we now have the answers thanks to his keeping of much paperwork and notes etc.
The receiving of the Ralph Kohn Collection was made possible through the generosity of Ralph’s family and particularly Peter Kohn, Ralph’s son, who put aside all the Eagle items. I wish to put on record our sincere thanks for this gesture. Ralph will never be forgotten and although he is no longer with us he still speaks through his collection.
PS we have started putting pictures of some of Ralph collection on the web site. Look at updates front page first drop down.
MIKE MARIANS
Our thanks also go the Mike’s nieces, Susan and Barbara who have given the archives a number of pictures and photographs that belonged to him. Likewise these add to the pictorial section of the archives. They are a living memory to a great man.
We always appreciate items that are given to the archives your generosity help us to maintain a fully documented archive for the future generations.
Eric Tarrant Archivist.

INTERESTING !! I wonder if he included us?
An article from Flight Magazine 8th April 1961:-
At a news conference in London last week the Minister of Planes, Mr Hugh Strangeways, announced that no fewer than 14 small British Independent airlines had been forced out of business during the previous week. He was, he said, delighted at the results of his campaign to “wipe all small British airlines of the face of the earth”. He added that he was intending to introduce new legislation, which would “make it impossible for even the most determined and enterprising small British airline company to remain in business for more than five minutes”.
The Minister dismissed recent suggestions that the death penalty should be introduced to deter the managements of small airlines from introducing low fares, and suggestions that life imprisonment should be the penalty for such offences as the achievement of low operating costs, the innovation of fresh ideas, personal service, specialized work for charterers, membership of the Baltic Exchange, and so on. Such measures, he said, would be “unduly restrictive” – though they might have to be applied if matters got out of hand.
He was hoping, he said, looking at his watch, that another 32 small independents would be forced out of business during the next 24 hours.

Over the past years I have been putting together what I consider an excellent history of our airline through the pages of old aviation magazines. We have a number of pages that are photocopies and will not last as long as the originals. So my request to you is that if you have old copies of any avaition magazines that you would be willing to donate to the archive then that wouild be appreciated. We have already six large A4 folders full so far and more pages waiting to be added. I intend put on the thread from time to time the magazines that we require.
Flight Mag. 7th July 1966 Aeroplane 10th November 1966 Flight Mag. 5th January 1967 Flight Mag. 4th January 1968 Flight Mag. 11th January 1968 Flight Mag. 18th January 1968 Flight Mag. 7th March 1968 Flight Mag. 8th January 1960 Flight Mag. 18th March 1960 Flight Mag. 7th October 1961
Flight Mag. 30th October 1948 Flight Mag. 28th April 1949 Flight Mag. 28th July 1949 Flight Mag. 12 January 1950
Many thanks for any help more will be added over the next few weeks. Respond to britisheagleint @aol.com

Recently whilst looking through a number of old flight magazines I came across a letter from David Shepherd the well known artist. He painted a picture of the Lancaster NX739 at Blackbushe in 1954. The title of the picture was: "Q for Queenie, late of the Dam Busters" Has anyone seen this picture or even own a copy? The aircraft was flown and maintained by Eagle Aviation for the MOD on photographic duties.

Over the years since we have had an official archive many photos of staff have come in. We now hold several folders amounting to some 900+ photos of staff. It would be good if we could add more. So if you have any photos of yourself or others, ideally in uniform but not to worry if you had no uniform as such we still would like to add your picture to the archive, and would be willing to send originals or copies that would be appreciated. Please indicate which department you worked in. Many thanks Eric

Does anyone recall Britannia G-ARKA after Cunard pulled out and it was re painted with the titles 'BRITISH EAGLE INTERNATIONAL'. Did it ever fly with these new titles?

COMPLEMENTARY LETTERS TO STAFF
The response to my request for copies of complementary letters issued to the staff has been very good and I would like to thank you all for sending them in. The file in the archives for this subject is ever increasing. It shows to what extent, particularly the cabin crew were willing to go to see that our passengers were looked after. They are a tribute to all concerned.
Now may be you have not seen this request and I apologise but I would gladly receive any other letters (copies will do) to include in the archives. Contact: britisheagleint@aol.com Thank you, Eric

As I say just something different. What the archivist get up when away from the office. The roller is a Wallis and Steevens roller. Built in 1903 as a traction engine called 'Billy' and converted to a roller in 1929. Belongs to the Blists Hill Victorian Musem at Iron bridge. Happy days!
