BA1-11 Engine Failure BHX-(LHR)-PMI c. Feb 1968 or 67 by oncemorealoft
My first ever flight in an aircraft was on board a BAC 1-11 from Birmingham to Palma, Majorca, I think around Feb 1968 (I was 10 years old) but it may have been Feb 67. Shortly after a night take-off from BHX there was a succession of several loud bumps from the rear of the aircraft and a few minutes later the pilot or co-pilot calmly announced that we had suffered an engine failure (or he may have said he had to shut down one engine) and that we would be diverting to LHR. I’m guessing with the benefit of hindsight and some 20 years in the airline industry that what we heard was a compressor stall on one of the Speys. We flew over London with great views of the city lights and landed trailed by full emergency services to a normal gate disembarkation. I distinctly remember disembarking from the rear air stairs under the noisy APU to see adjacent Alitalia and Iberia Caravelles on the LHR apron. I replacement BAC1-11 was found (I presume it wasn’t the same aircraft) and we were on our way to PMI after a couple of hours. I was already an aircraft nut but the experience and the memory certainly fuelled my interest. I was so sad to hear of British Eagles demise later that year. If anyone on this forum can add any facts to this forty-year-old memory Id love to hear from them. Many thanks

It was 1968. I was half asleep, listening to my Gauers Informant VHF band radio in Coventry, directly under the flight path, and heard the captain declaring an emergency. The aircraft flew overhead presently, it sounded different and lower than usual.
