G-APSA urgent appeal by Cloudmaster
Dear all, we are delighted to announce that the decision has been taken to return G-APSA to her original 1959 Eagle colour scheme. With a busy season ahead, work will begin as soon as we have sufficient information to do the job accurately. We urgently need as many good photographs and related items as possible. We particularly need a good image of the Eagle logo and the font used in the Eagle Airways titles. They must be from G-APSA in the original 1959 (modified Maritime Central Airways) colour scheme. The aircraft will be making several public appearances this year and is a headline act at Farnborough. We will acknowledge everyone who provides information that assists this exciting project. Kind regards, Julian Firth, Head of DC-6 operations Air Atlantique

I presume you have seen the colour photo printed on p.153 of The Eagle Years 1948-1968 by David Hedges, published by tahs 2001, which judging by the caption is the scheme you are seeking. There is also a smaller B&W shot of G-APSA on p.23 and a slightly clearer small photo of G-APOM in the same scheme on p24, with a very clear photo of G-APON in flight p.120. The book does not however have a drawing of the winged eagle in flight logo which is being sought after, and nor do I. The book also shows TWO other schemes on G-APSA: a B&W on p.121 shows Cunard Eagle scheme and titles, while a colour photo on p.154 shows an earlier, different Eagle Airways scheme and tail. There is also a colour photo of G-APSA in Atlantic Airlines scheme p.154 just for good measure. The colour photo p.153, of the scheme you are referring to is, unfortunately, not the sharpest of images and credited to Ralph Kohn - who is unknown to me, but others may well be able to put you in touch with David Hedges and his Eagle photo collection and contacts. The B&W p.23 shot and the very nice shot of G-APON in flight are credited to the Ron Francis Collection. I’d never appreciated before that the 3 DC-6s that wore the white tail scheme wore similar, but not identical schemes. The small p.23 shot of G-APSA is also available on this site by following the G-APSA registration link and when enlarged is superior to that in the book. Cloudmaster, I’ve also sent you a PM.I wish you well with your research, with hopefully previously unpublished information forthcoming, unlike my post here.

Great news. I do recall Mike Collett saying that this project might happen some years ago. Hears a link to a picture of G-APSA taken at Tokyo in 1960

And Maritime Central Colours 1958

An action picture of G-APSA in Eagle Airways c/s is published on www.bsl-mlh-planes.net (1951-1960, Eagle Aviation / Eagle Airways). An other picture taken in the next decade shows the lady in full British Eagle c/s (1961-1970, British Eagle International Airlines) A direct link to the picture searched for: www.bsl-mlh-planes.net/bilder/02_pic/1315.jpg It was not easy to rebuild the picture. In one of the first stages it looked like that: www.bsl-mlh-planes.net/bilder/02_pic/1314.jpg We very hope to give an input to restore the plane into the great Eagle Airways c/s - and of course hope to add new pictures of it to our site very soon! (And we like to invite you to view a triple of Eagle Airways Vikings on our site too - plus a lot of other interesting pictures of that time. Sorry that we are in German only - yet - but the pictures talk for themselves ;-)

Rolf, Many thanks for your input with photos of Eagle aircraft particularly G-APSA. My wife is from the Deutschland and she will be able to translate for me. A question do you know what was happening to the Britannia G-AOVE. Was it a engine fire or a fuel spillage? It was good to see such a great picture of the Britannia G-APYY. It was the first Britannia that I worked on. We look forward to further Eagle pictures in the future. Many thanks.

A question do you know what was happening to the Britannia G-AOVE. Was it an engine fire or a fuel spillage? ... “I’m very happy to be able to post the short report of the eye witness and at the same time photographer of the picture, Marcel Tschudin”. I was on duty as the handling agent when G-AOVE landed in Basel. When arriving at the tarmac I discovered brown smoke coming out of the back of engine#4. I alerted the crew and they asked for the fire brigade to fight the fire. We evacuated the passengers via usual aircraft stairs. An investigation was stated and it was found that electrical cables were burning in engine#4. Best regards Marcel Tschudin” Rolf

Hello Rolf, Many thanks for your reply and information regarding the fire on G-AOVE. I seem to remember that there was problem with a transformer rectifier unit (TRU) that caught fire. This may well have been that occasion. The unit was returned to Heathrow for investigation. If someone knows different then please let us know. Red Eagle
