B.O.A.C. COMET 4's You may recall that I raised the question of the purchase by British Eagle of ex B.O.A.C Comet aircraft. We had no real results apart from comments made in flight magazine. Below is the request that I made;
Does anyone know about the details for the possible purchase of ex B.O.A.C Comet? This would have been in 1967. Flight magazine records a small item that says we were negotiating to purchase three. Later they record that we had a surprising response to a recruitment drive for Comet pilots most from the corporations!!! Now that says something! We needed 12 crews. If memory serves me correct I think that some maintenance guys went to MEA for training.
However just recently I was given for our archives about three large boxes containing some very interesting items and the following information was found about our proposed Comet purchase in a letter:
Quote: 'We are now in a position to be able to confirm that the registration numbers of the Comets 4B's that we have purchased from B.O.A.C, are: G-APDL/G-APDN/G-APDP. The aircraft are under-going 'check fours' and re-furbishing prior coming into service with British Eagle:the first aircraft to be operational and to join our fleet will be in mid June 1967, the others will follow at Monthly intervals'
But as Flight Magazine records Eagle were unable to find enough work for them so the order was cancelled.
My thanks to the donor.
